We have created some helpful tips for styling your wig, topper, and crown extension at home

Having worked with wigs, toppers, and crown extensions over the years, we know how they can completely change the way you feel about yourself and the confidence they can give you. They can be a complete lifesaver if your hair is thinning, you have alopecia, or a number of other autoimmune diseases that can affect your hair.

Because wigs don’t grow new hair, you are going to need to take extra care of your wig or topper to keep it looking beautiful for months to come. Be sure to keep the hair hydrated to avoid it potentially drying out, which can compromise the integrity of the colour. We have seen some shampoos and conditioners leave the wig looking heavy and bowl-like, to avoid this keep the shampoo and conditioner light but hydrating. The right shampoo and conditioner should leave the hair feeling hydrating and silky but with no residue coating the cuticle. Keep styling products water-based and light.

We have put together a list of our top five tips to keep your wig or topper feeling soft and hydrated.

  1. As the wig and topper do not grow new hair, something to keep in mind is the sun will be hitting the parting day after day. We have found slightly changing the position of the part, or flipping the part to the opposite side will help prevent colour fade or the ‘glow’ the root area can sometimes have after it has lightened in the sun. Keep the wig and topper hydrated with a shampoo like Hydrating shampoo, massage the shampoo gently into the ends of the hair working your way up to the root area.

  2. The amount of natural or bio hair you have will determine how frequently you wash your wig, topper, or crown extension. Generally, full wigs will need to be washed once a week, toppers can be stretched out the two weeks. When a wig is sitting on a scalp with no hair, Natural oils can get trapped in the base of the wig which can lead to hair breakage. A top tip from wig specialist The Beautiful Hair Boutique in Sydney, Australia is to wipe the inside of the wig base with a baby wipe to remove any excess oil every day. When washing the wig we find Balancing Shampoo helps to break down natural oils trapped in the base of the hair. Simply turn the wig inside out and gently pat the product onto the base, then rinse before turning back the right way and shampooing as usual.

  3. If you don’t have a wig stand or find a wig stand too bulky to travel with there are some great inexpensive collapsible options available. Or better still roll a towel into a ball and place it inside the wig, or drape the topper over the towel. Leave the ends of the hair dangling over the edge of a bench to avoid unnatural bends and kins in the hair.

  4. For a natural look brush the hair away from the face when the hair is wet. This will give you a natural bounce and movement around the face allowing you to change directions of the part throughout the day more easily.

  5. A common question is can you blow-dry the hair and use heat tools on the wig, topper, or crown extension, the simple answer is yes. Keep in mind the hair will not grow so over-styling the hair with heat tools will shorten the life of your wig, topper, or crown extension. Over the years we have found our Treatment Conditioner to be a hero product for keeping the hair hydrated and soft, a top seller at The Beautiful Hair Boutique where you can find the full range of V&M Spa shampoos and conditioner.

Wigs, toppers, crown extensions, and wefts can be incredibly liberating and give a huge amount of confidence, so enjoy your hair.
